UPI Transactions in India: Driving Digital Payment Revolution
India has become a global leader in real-time digital payments, as highlighted by a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) report titled “Growing Retail Digital Payments: The Value of Interoperability.” The credit goes to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and its UPI New Rules, launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). UPI has transformed the way Indians transfer money, offering seamless, secure, and instant transactions.
UPI Transaction New Rules, UPI New Rules 2025
Effective August 1, 2025, new UPI rules enhance security and performance by limiting API requests, monitoring transaction velocity, and enforcing TPS limits, ensuring safe, efficient, and fraud-resistant digital payment transactions nationwide.
UPI Rules from August 1
With the objective of improving the performance of UPI, following changes will be implemented starting August 1:
UPI Transaction Status
This allows an user to request for the status of the transaction. Under the new rules, the user may initiate the transaction status after 45 to 60 seconds of the initiation/authentication of original transaction.
UPI Balance Enquiry Limit: New Daily Cap Introduced
New UPI rules allow up to 50 daily balance checks per app, ensuring better performance, preventing misuse, and supporting secure transactions.

UPI Rules for Autopay Mandate Execution: New Time Restrictions
As per the updated UPI guidelines, users can now execute UPI Autopay mandates—including electricity bills, water bills, OTT subscriptions, and similar payments—only during non-peak hours.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), peak hours are defined as:
- 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
- 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM
Any other time is considered non-peak hours. During these peak periods, UPI members must restrict non-customer-initiated APIs to ensure optimal transaction flow and system stability
UPI Linked Account View Limit: New Daily Restriction
Revised UPI rules limit the List Account feature to 25 uses per app daily, improving system performance, preventing API misuse, and ensuring smoother, secure access to linked bank account details.
